Text Meets Art
"A work of art encountered as a work of art is an experience, not a statement or an answer to a question. Art is not only about something; it is something. A work of art is a thing in the world, not just a text or commentary on the world."
— Susan Sontag
1. ✨ Welcome & Warm Up
After a brief activity to warm us up, and a quick overview of our Group Agreements, we will begin our Final Session.
During this final meeting, will introduce a new, related contemporary “text” — a film adaptation, work of visual art, stage performance, poem, and so forth — into the dialogue.
The questions we ask in this final session will prompt both an understanding of that “text” itself as well as how it sits in conversation with our primary text.
2. 💬 Recall & Discussion
The questions we ask in this Final Session will prompt both an understanding of that “text” itself as well as how it sits in conversation with our primary text. We might ask what it means for one text to live within or through another—how we can integrate and keep following the threads we have uncovered in our own writing, research, and communities.
Recall: We’ll practice another round of Recall, sharing words, phrases, ideas, questions, and moments that we remember off the top of our minds — without the need to layer on interpretation.
Opening Question: The Instructor will bring a well-designed, open-ended question to guide us into a dialogue, but as a reminder, answering it is never the end-all be-all.
Discussion: We will work together to transition between passages, moving forward and backward, and noticing where our challenges and unanswered questions remain. The goal is that everyone will have the chance to contribute and direct the group discussion, and to strengthen each student’s sense of how to navigate the text.
3. 🌀 Summarize
In the final 10 minutes of each session, we will summarize what we’ve discussed. Again, this is a moment where the instructor will invite each student to contribute a thought. We will build metacognitive awareness—awareness of our thinking processes—without any judgement, on our individual and collective process and contribution.
4. 📝 Final Closing Prompt
The instructor will offer three, final well-designed prompts based on the age/cohort type and the content of that session’s reading:
An academic writing prompt (e.g., a research essay).
A creative writing prompt (e.g., a persona poem or a text-to-life essay).
A research activity prompt (e.g. dig up more on the origins of words, texts, ideas, and key concepts we explored).
Students are encouraged to continue the conversation in our Circle space.
5. 🌞 Cohort Reflections & Thanks
As this will be the last time that we will all see each other as a cohort, we will close with a round of affirmations for each other and reflections on the work we have done.
Thank you for your courageous, generous, and active participation!

The First Session
Begin
We’ll begin with introductions, followed by a review of our group agreements and some housekeeping. Then we will delve into our first discussion through an opening question!
The Middle Sessions
Deep Reading Together
The Instructor will guide students in a rich dialogue about the text. We will work together to close-read and authentically express our thoughts and ideas.
